Who?What?Where?When?Why?
Three U.S instructors helped me understand the importance of the 5W’s. Bob Gansler(former USMNT head coach), Tony DiCicco (former USWNT head coach), and Jay Hoffmann(former USYNT U17/U20 and Paralympic)….
Who?
Who is performing the skill? Do they start with or without the ball?
What?
What skill is being performed? We describe the skill by focusing on surfaces of the foot. Then describe ankle position (example; ankle locked, toe pointed down). We move up the kinetic chain in order to describe the full technique.
Where?
Where would we likely use this skill on the field? We use examples within the field of play and demonstrations during activities with pressure.
When?
When is it important to use specific techniques on the field? Timing is an essential element of the game. Technical components that each player refines should continue in their team training sessions.
Why?
As I pass through outside team training sessions, I think this question is the most skipped. This is most important because it is the mind/body connection. All players must learn why they are making certain passes, dribbling, shooting, defending, and pressing in all areas of the field. This game is mental without this kids will lose a step. I hear some outside club coaches sometimes spend hours lecturing when this must be answered with a sentence or two. This is where experience in the youth game at its highest levels is necessary.
It’s all in the details, this is what the Peak Training Co. Staff provides.
